Centre downs Asbury 3-1 in women's soccer
Coming off its first loss of the season, the Centre College women's soccer team rebounded to defeat Asbury College 3-1, Thursday, Sept. 21, in Danville, Ky.
With the win, the Colonels improve to 6-1 overall, marking the second straight season Centre has won six of its first seven matches. Asbury falls to 5-2-1 with the loss.
Sophomore Erin Menard (LaGrange, Ky.) started the scoring, taking a pass from senior Clay McCollum (Prospect, Ky.) off a free kick from the corner and scoring with a header past the goalkeeper for her seventh goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
Less than four minutes later it was McCollum doing the scoring. After an intentional handball in the box by Asbury, McCollum drilled the penalty kick for her second goal of the year to put Centre ahead 2-0.
Asbury was quick to answer as Carol Fogler, off an assist from Miranda Wiley, scored only 34 seconds later from just inside the 18-yard line to cut the lead in half at 2-1.
With 34:58 on the clock in the first half, sophomore Jessie Schatz (Louisville, Ky.) found the back of the net for her first goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Tamaryn Tuller (Prospect, Ky.).
The two teams battled through a scoreless second half the score would end in a 3-1 Centre victory. The Colonels out shot Asbury 19-4 in the match and held an 11-1 advantage in penalty kicks. Freshman Rosie McAuley (Fairborn, Ohio) earned the win in goal for Centre. McAuley made one save in two chances.
The Colonels will look to open the season 7-1 for the second consecutive season when they travel to Hanover, Ind. to play the Hanover College Panthers. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
