Sewanee defeats Centre women 3-1
For the second consecutive season, the Centre College women's soccer team won its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) opener, this time defeating Rhodes College 2-1, Friday, Sept. 29, in Memphis, Tenn.
With the win, the Colonels have now won two straight to improve to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the SCAC, while Rhodes falls to 6-2-1 overall and 0-2-1 in league play.
Sophomore Erin Menard (LaGrange, Ky.) opened the scoring with her eighth goal of the season 19:37 into the first period. Rhodes' Caroline Voelkel evened the score at one apiece in the first half off an assist from Melanie Sharry.
The score would remain tied until the 63:06 mark in the second half, when freshman Katie Kerr (Canyon County, Calif.) found the back of the net for the game-winner. It was Kerr's third goal of the season.
The two teams played an even first half with Centre edging the Lynx in shots 5-4. The Colonels, however, controlled much of the second half out shooting Rhodes 12-4. Centre also had a slight advantage in corner kicks 5-4 for the match. Freshman goalkeeper Rosie McAuley (Fairborn, Ohio) earned the win for the Colonels stopping four shots.
Centre will next travel to Jackson, Miss. to play the Millsaps College Majors. The SCAC contest is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m.
