Colonels win 5-1 in regular season finale

On the final day of the regular season, the Centre College women's team capped off one of its strongest seasons ever, defeating Hendrix College 5-1 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match, Sunday, Nov. 5, in Danville, Ky.

The win moves the Colonels to 14-5 overall and 6-3 in the SCAC, while Hendrix falls to 2-13 overall and 0-9 in league action. Centre's 14 wins are the most since the 1996 season, when it finished 14-5-1. The six SCAC wins also tie the 1998 team for the most conference wins in one season.

The Colonels jumped on the scoreboard early when sophomore Erin Menard (LaGrange, Ky.) scored the match's opening goal only 2:06 into the match, off an assist from senior Clay McCollum (Prospect, Ky.) to give Centre a 1-0 lead. The goal was Menard's team-leading 14th of the year, while McCollum's assist was her team-leading seventh.

After a Hendrix goal tied the match at one apiece, Menard untied the score with her second goal of the match and 15th of the season at the 24:35 mark. Sophomore Mollie Sheron (Wooster, Ohio) had the assist, her first of the year.

Sophomore Allison Terry (Lexington, Ky.) scored her sixth goal of the year at the 31:56 mark and Centre took a 3-1 lead into the break.

The score remained 3-1 until Terry found the back of the net once again, this time at the 61:23 mark in the second half to put Centre ahead 4-1. Sophomore Kate Anderson (Louisville, Ky.) notched her second assist of the season on the score.

Less than three minutes later, freshman Marina Hoe (Ewing, Va.) added the final tally of the match, her fourth of the season for the final 5-1 score.

Centre controlled the entire match, out shooting the Warriors 22-7, including an 11-0 advantage in the second half alone. The Colonels also had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks. Freshmen Rosie McCauley (Fairborn, Ohio) and Bethany Pratt (Richmond, Ky.) combined for the win in goal for Centre. McCauley made four saves in the win, while Pratt was not tested.
