Hoe has big night in Colonels' win over Asbury
Sophomore Marina Hoe (Ewing, Va.) scored two goals and assisted on another to help lead the Centre College women's soccer team to a 4-0 shutout victory over Asbury College, Tuesday, Sept. 12, in Wilmore, Ky.
The Colonels, which have now played in five shutouts this season, improve to 3-2 overall, while Asbury falls to 3-3 on the year.
Hoe wasted little time putting the Colonels on the scoreboard as the sophomore forward scored her first goal of the night less than four minutes into the first half. Junior Ashley Ivey (Elizabethtown, Ky.) picked up her first assist of the year on the score.
Just over 13 minutes later, Hoe struck again, this time unassisted on a put back to put Centre ahead 2-0. The two goals are the first and second of the year for Hoe, who had four goals all of last year.
Leading 2-0 entering the second half, the Colonels added to their lead when junior Erin Menard (Lagrange, Ky.) found the back of the net for her third goal of the season to extend the lead to 3-0. Hoe had the assist, her fourth of the season.
With time winding down, freshman Brittany Garr (Louisville, Ky.) capped the scoring with her second goal of the season, off an assist from sophomore Katherine MacMurray (Hilton Head Island, S.C.). It was also MacMurray's first assist of the year.
Centre controlled much of the match out-shooting Asbury 20-3. The Colonels also held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Rosie McAuley (Fairborn, Ohio) earned her third shutout win of the year stopping the only shot she faced.
Centre will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 15, against Wittenberg University. The match is set to start at 4 p.m. in Springfield, Ohio.
