Women's Soccer News

Somewhere in Cameroon, Africa, young women footballers (or as we would say in America – soccer players) are competing in the hot sun on dirt fields. One team, representing the University of N 'Gaoundéré (located in the north-central province of Adamaoua ) wears the Centre College yellow jersey while team Union wears the black jerseys with gold numbers. Though these teams are different, they share a few things in common. The first is the program they are a part of called Breaking Ground.

Breaking Ground is a non-profit organization that is committed to grassroots action, sustainability, community empowerment, and global awareness. Through networks of friends, families, co-workers, and even perfect strangers, they raise money to support sustainable, community-based, projects in Cameroon, Africa .

In serving as a pathway by which communities unite to undertake projects, Breaking Ground builds much more than schools and water sources. With every project they help implement, they embark on a mission of bringing people together through intercultural awareness, human compassion, and the shared satisfaction of participating in grassroots community action.

As the people at Breaking Ground say: It's about grassroots.  It's about sustainability.  It's about creating cultural and global awareness.  It's about making positive change.  It's about building communities from the ground up.  It's about breaking ground.

When Grounds Coordinator, Sara Oxford contacted Jay about getting involved with this organization he simply asked the question: how can I help? Five months later, the Centre Women's soccer program was very excited to see their uniforms being used by such a noble organization.

Oxford a graduate of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference member, Sewanee University (Tenn.) surprised Coach Hoffman with these wonderful pictures included in this article and the following nice note:

Dear Coach Hoffman,

A late personal thank you for the donation of jerseys and balls to Breaking Grounds female football program. Your donation was incredible and completed the supplies needed to continue the program.

The yellow jerseys went to the University of N 'Gaoundéré team, who wear yellow and black as their colors as well. The black jerseys are worn by Union a new and young team. All of the balls were also distributed to teams within the program. I am amazed by the girl's progress and thrilled with the program. Thank you for your generosity and support. It is going a really, really long way. I will be in touch soon.

Thank you,
Sarah Oxford
Ground Coordinator

“When I opened up the pictures and saw our Centre College uniforms being worn it truly reminded me just how special the game of soccer is and how fortunate we are to have people like Sara Oxford who continue to make this world better.” ~ Jay Hoffman
