Bergstrom's goal lifts Centre to 1-0 win in women's soccer
After 64:12 of scoreless soccer sophomore Cindy Bergstrom (Alexandria, Va.) scored the only goal of the match to lift the Centre College women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Birmingham Southern College, Sunday, Oct. 7, in Danville, Ky.
With the win, the Colonels have now won three straight to improve to 8-4 overall, while Birmingham Southern falls to 7-3 on the season. Because the Panthers are transitioning to Division III this season, the match will not affect the conference records.
The match was scoreless through the first half as Centre held a slight 8-5 edge in shots, while each team had two corner kicks apiece.
Just over 19 minutes into the second half, Bergstrom scored her fourth goal of the season off an assist from junior Allison Terry (Lexington, Ky.) for the final 1-0 tally.
Centre ended the match with a 14-12 advantage in shots and a 3-2 lead in corner kicks. Sophomore Rosie McAuley (Fairborn, Ohio) earned the shutout win in goal for the Colonels. McAuley stopped all five shots she faced.
Centre will next play Sewanee-The University of the South Friday, Oct. 12. The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and will begin at 7 p.m. CST in Sewanee, Tenn. |
