Women's Soccer News

Having scored 16 goals through its first nine matches, the Centre College women's soccer team broke out in a big way posting a 9-0 shutout over Hanover College in a non-conference match, Thursday, Sept. 27 in Danville, Ky.

The Colonels, which fell in a tough 2-1 overtime match to Rhodes College three days earlier, improve to 6-4 overall on the season, while Hanover falls to 3-6 this year.

Seven different players scored at least one goal and two players scored two goals as Centre scored the second most goals in a game in school history. The highest output by a Centre women's team was an 11-0 thumping of Millsaps College in 1998.

Sophomore Marina Hoe (Ewing, Va.) opened the scoring with her third goal of the season at the 28:15 mark in the first half. Less than five minutes later, freshman Anna Horne (Louisville, Ky.) netted her first goal of her collegiate career to give Centre an early 2-0 lead.

The Colonels were far from done as sophomore Elizabeth Hooper (Arlington, Va.) and freshmen Brittany Garr (Louisville, Ky.) and Lora Gralheer (Lexington, Ky.) added a goal each to put Centre ahead 5-0 at the break.

The scoring continued in the second half with sophomore Cindy Bergstrom (Alexandria, Va.) scoring her first of two goals of the night. Freshman Sarah Hall (Danville, Ky.) scored her first collegiate goal of her career followed by the second goal each by Garr and Bergstrom for the final 9-0 tally.

Along with their first career goals, Hall and Horne also notched their first assists of the year as Hall assisted on three scored and Horne on two more. Juniors Allison Terry (Lexington, Ky.) and Mollie Sheron (Wooster, Ohio) also had an assist each in the win.

Centre out shot the Panthers 27-4 on the night and held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore Rosie McAuley (Fairborn, Ohio) and freshman Jenny Young (Ross, Ohio) combined for the shutout in goal. Young made the only save of the night for the Colonels, her first save of her career.

Centre will return to action Friday, Oct. 5 to host Millsaps College in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) contest. The match will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
