Centre women cruise to 5-1 win over Hendrix
In the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) opener for both teams, the Centre College women's soccer team scored a season-high five goals en route to a 5-1 road victory over Hendrix College Friday, Sept. 21 in Conway, Ark.
With the win, the Colonels have now won two straight and three of their last four to improve to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in the SCAC. Hendrix falls to 4-1-2 on the season and 0-1 in league action.
Junior forward Erin Menard (Lagrange, Ky.) opened the scoring at the 16:54 mark in the first period scoring her fifth goal of the year to put Centre ahead 1-0.
Less than two minutes later freshman Lora Gralheer (Lexington, Ky.) scored the match's second goal, her first of the year, to extend the lead to 2-0.
The score remained that way into the second half. Less than three minutes into the second period, Menard struck again scoring her sixth goal of the season at the 47:46 mark to give Centre a 3-0 lead.
After a Hendrix goal at the 60:01 mark cut the lead to 3-1, junior Allison Terry (Lexington, Ky.) and freshman Brittany Garr (Louisville, Ky.) sealed the win scoring a goal each for the final 5-1 tally.
The Colonels controlled much of the match out-shooting the Warriors 16-2 on the evening, while holding a slight 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Rosie McAuley (Fairborn, Ohio) picked up the win for Centre making one save.
The Colonels will return to action Sunday, Sept. 23, when they travel to Memphis, Tenn. to play Rhodes College. The SCAC contest will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is set to begin at 11 a.m. CST. |
