Centre women route Oglethorpe 5-0
Coming off a 2-0 defeat to Sewanee-University of the South Friday night, the Centre College women's soccer team rebounded to defeat Oglethorpe 5-0 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) match, Sunday, Oct. 14 in Atlanta, Ga.
The Colonels, who have now played in five consecutive shutouts - four wins and one loss - improve to 9-5 overall and 3-2 in the SCAC, while Oglethorpe remains winless at 0-9 overall and 0-5 in league play.
Centre jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when junior Allison Terry (Lexington, Ky.) connected on her fifth goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Marina Hoe (Ewing, Va.).
The Colonels continued to lead 1-0 until the 36:04 mark when junior Mollie Sheron (Wooster, Ohio) tallied her first score of the year off a corner kick to give Centre a 2-0 lead.
Just over two minutes later, freshman Brittany Garr (Louisville, Ky.) added to the lead with her seventh score of the season. Freshman Sarah Hall (Danville, Ky.) had the assist.
Leading 3-0 into the second half, junior Erin Menard (LaGrange, Ky.) and freshman Anna Horne (Louisville, Ky.) added a goal each for the final 5-0 tally. Terry assisted the Menard goal, while Hall and sophomore Elizabeth Hooper (Arlington, Va.) notched an assist each on the Horne score.
The Colonels dominated the match out-shooting the Stormy Petrals 22-2 on the day with a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Rosie McAuley (Fairborn, Ohio) picked up the shutout victory for Centre.
The Colonels will next travel to Georgetown, Texas, Friday, Oct. 19 to play Southwestern University. The SCAC match will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and will begin at 5 p.m. CST.
