Women's Soccer News Centre women drop season-opener 1-0 to Otterbein A first half goal by the visiting team was enough to send the Centre College women's soccer team to a 1-0 loss to Otterbein College in its opening match of the season, Saturday, Sept. 1 in Danville, Ky. The match was played as part of the 2007 Centre Showcase. The defeat ends a string of four consecutive seasons, the Colonels have won their season-opening match. The last time Centre fell on opening day was Aug. 31, 2002, when the Colonels fell to Wilmington College. The score of that match was also 1-0. The two teams battled scoreless back and forth until the 17:53 mark when Otterbein's Becky Bowser scored her the team's first goal of the season unassisted for the match's lone goal. The Cardinals out-shot Centre 10-6 on the day and held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Rosie McAuley (Fairborn, Ohio) was tagged with the loss. McAuley made three saves in the loss.
In the opening match of the Centre Showcase, Ohio Northern University used a goal in the second half to defeat Transylvania University 1-0. All four teams will be back in action Sunday, Sept. 2 for the second day of the Showcase. Transylvania will play Otterbein at 1 p.m. followed by Centre squaring off against Ohio Northern at 3 p.m. in Danville, Ky. |
