Hebbeler, Wendschlag chosen for SCAC weekly awards
Centre College junior women's soccer players Laura Hebbeler (Park Hills, Ky.) and Nicole Wendschlag (Lexington, Ky.) have been selected as Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Women's Soccer Players-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, Oct. 15 through Sunday, Oct. 21.
Hebbeler was named one of two Co-Offensive Players-of-the-Week after she earned two critical points off of corner kicks in the Colonels’ 2-0 win over regionally-ranked Southwestern University Friday night.
In the 86th minute, Hebbeler stepped up and played a beautiful corner into the box, which was first flicked by junior Erin Menard (Lagrange, Ky.) and finally headed in by sophomore Katherine MacMurray (Hilton Head Island, S.C.). Then, in the 87th minute, Hebbeler again delivered, this time finding junior Allison Terry (Lexington, Ky.) who volleyed the ball in for the game-winner. The points were the first of the season for Hebbeler.
Wendschlag was named the SCAC's Defensive Player-of-the-Week after helping the Colonels post a 1-0-1 mark over the weekend as the Centre defense held the league's two highest scoring teams to just two goals combined. Trinity University averages 3.00 goals and Southwestern averages 2.93 goals per game.
Wendschlag played a pivotal role in the Colonels' 2-1 win over Southwestern. Her ability to hold the ball and effectively distribute out of the back proved crucial in the victory.
Sunday morning in San Antonio, Texas, Wendschlag again stepped up for the Colonels by helping to anchor the defense in its 1-1 double-overtime draw against nationally-ranked Trinity. Centre had been 0-15 against Trinity since 1992.
Hebbeler and Wendschlag are the second and third Centre players to be honored by the SCAC. Junior Kate Anderson (Louisville, Ky.) was named the league's Defensive Player-of-the-Week following week six of the season.
Up next for the Colonels in an SCAC match against Austin College Sunday, Oct. 28. The contest will be played as part of Centre's Homecoming Weekend and is set to start at noon in Danville, Ky. |
