Rhodes defeats Centre women 2-1 in overtime
Rhodes College scored a goal just over three minutes into overtime to defeat the Centre College women's soccer team 2-1 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) match Sunday, Sept. 23 in Memphis, Tenn.
The Colonels, which defeated Hendrix College 5-1 Friday, Sept. 21, fall to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the SCAC, while Rhodes improves to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in league play.
The Lynx jumped on the scoreboard first as Jessie Cassidy scored off an assist from Bailey Morgan 9:36 into the first half to give Rhodes an early 1-0 lead.
The Colonels answered less than six minutes later when sophomore Cindy Bergstrom (Alexandria, Va.) netted her first goal of the season to tie the match at one apiece.
The score remained tied at one at the break and would stay that way the entire second half forcing overtime. In the overtime period Rhodes' Alice Hilgart ended the match with the game winner at the 93:06 mark to give the Lynx their second conference win in as many tries.
Rhodes out shot the Colonels 12-10 and owned a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore Rosie McAuley (Fairborn, Ohio) suffered the loss in goal for Centre. McAuley stopped four shots and allowed more than one goal in a match for the first time this season.
The Colonels will step out of conference action Thursday, Sept. 27 as they host Hanover College. The match is set to start at 7 p.m. in Danville, Ky. |
