Women's Soccer News Colonels rally for 2-1 win over Southwestern
The Centre College women's soccer team scored two goals in the final four minutes of play to rally from a 1-0 deficit and defeat Southwestern University 2-1 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) match, Friday, Oct. 19 in Georgetown, Texas. With the win, the Colonels have now won five of their last six games to improve to 10-5 overall and 4-2 in the SCAC, while Southwestern falls to 10-4 overall and drops its first SCAC match to fall to 4-1 in league play. The Pirates jumped on the scoreboard 25:15 into the first half as Sarah Holifield scored her second goal of the season to put Southwestern ahead 1-0.
The score stayed that way through halftime and for much of the second half, but with 3:58 left to play sophomore Katherine MacMurray (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) hit the back of the net off a corner kick to tie the match at one apiece. Juniors Erin Menard (LaGrange, Ky.) and Lara Hebbeler (Park Hills, Ky.) picked up an assist each on the goal.
The Colonels wasted little time scoring the game-winner as junior Allison Terry (Lexington, Ky.) hit the go-ahead goal only 0:59 later off an assist from junior Casey Yeakel (Prospect, Ky.) for the final 2-1 tally.
Centre out shot the Pirates 16-5 on the evening and held a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Rosie McAuley (Fairborn, Ohio) earned the win for the Colonels stopping two of the three shots she faced.
The Colonels will return to action Sunday, Oct. 21 against Trinity University. The SCAC match will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and will begin at 11 a.m. CST in San Antonio, Texas. |
