Women's soccer post 2-0 shutout over Transylvania
For the seventh time this season already, the Centre College women's soccer team played in a matching ending in a shutout, this time blanking Transylvania University 2-0 in a non-conference match, Wednesday, Sept. 19 in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels improve to 4-3 overall on the season, while Transylvania falls to 5-3. Centre has outscored its opponents 10-3 on the year in winning four matches by shutout and losing three matches by the same 1-0 score.
After a scoreless first half of play, the two teams battled scoreless for much of the second half. With just under seven minutes to play, junior Erin Menard (Lagrange, Ky.) was awarded a penalty kick, which she made to give Centre a 1-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later, the Colonels added an insurance goal as sophomore Elizabeth Hooper (Arlington, Va.) scored her first goal of the season off an assist from junior Allison Terry (Lexington, Ky.) for the final 2-0 tally.
Centre out shot the Pioneers 15-7 on the night and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Rosie McAuley (Fairborn, Ohio) posted her fourth shutout of the season stopping all five shots she faced.
The Colonels will open their 2007 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference season, Friday, Sept. 21, when they travel to Conway, Ark. to play Hendrix College. The match will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and will begin at 6 p.m. CST. |
