Women's soccer team ties #19 Trinity 1-1
Trailing by a goal late in the second half, the Centre College women's soccer team tied the match at one apiece, but neither team was able to score through two overtimes and the Colonels ended with a 1-1 tie against #19 Trinity University, Sunday, Oct. 21 in San Antonio, Texas.
Centre moves to 10-5-1 overall and 4-2-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) play, while Trinity is now 10-3-1 overall and 5-0-1 in league action.
Just over 20 minutes into the first period, the Tigers' Claire Edwards scored an unassisted goal to put Trinity up 1-0. The score remained that way until the 73:26 mark in the second half when Centre sophomore Cindy Bergstrom (Alexandria, Va.) tied the match at one with her fifth goal of the season. Sophomore Elizabeth Hooper (Arlington, Va.) and junior Lizzie Hubbard (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) had the assists.
Regulation ended in a 1-1 tie as did both overtime periods and the two teams ended with their first ties of the season. Trinity out shot the Colonels 24-9 on the day and held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore Rosie McAuley (Fairborn, Ohio) played the entire match in goal for Centre making five saves.
The Colonels will return home Sunday, Oct. 28 for an SCAC match against Austin College. The contest will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and will start at noon in Danville, Ky. |
