Centre women open season with 4-1 victory
With the score tied at one apiece at the half, the Centre College women's soccer team scored three times in the second half to pull away for a 4-1 win over Asbury College in its season-opener Tuesday, Sept. 1 in Wilmore, Ky.
The win puts Centre at 1-0, while Asbury falls to 0-3 on the year. The Colonels have now won five of their last seven season-openers.
Just under four minutes into the match, senior Cindy Bergstom (Alexandria, Va.) scored Centre's first goal of the season off an assist from junior Brittany Garr (Louisville, Ky.).
With 19:19 on the clock Asbury tied the match as Rebecca Batey scored off an assist from Ashley Amburgy and the match would remain tied into the half.
Following an assist earlier in the match, Garr scored her first goal of the year at the 54:34 mark to give Centre the lead for good.
Freshman Amy Hebbeler (Ft. Wright, Ky.) scored her first collegiate goal at the 69:11 mark and fellow freshman Brittany Eisner (Louisville, Ky.) added her first score at the 86:14 mark for the final 4-1 tally. Junior Jessie Deffendall (Hendersonville, Tenn.) and freshman Rachel Brannen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) notched their first assists of the season.
The Colonels out-shot Asbury 13-6 and held a 5-0 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Rosie McAuley (Fairborn, Ohio) earned her first win of the season making one save.
Centre will return to action Saturday, Sept. 5 when it hosts St. Mary's College at 7 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
