Second half goal propels Centre women to 2-1 win over Austin
With less than 10 minutes to play, sophomore Chelsea Stanley (New Albany, Ind.) scored and the defense did its job as the Centre College women's soccer team defeated Austin College 2-1 Friday, Oct. 2 in Danville, Ky.
With the win, the Colonels improved to 6-3-1 overall and 2-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) play, while Austin falls to 5-4-1 overall and 0-3 in league action.
Junior Jessie Deffendall (Hendersonville, Tenn.) opened the scoring in the first half with a goal 8:52 into the opening period to give Centre a 1-0 lead.
After Austin's Shelley Casey tied the match at one apiece at the 57:56 mark in the second half, Stanley scored her second goal of the year at the 81:21 mark off an assist from sophomore Kelsey Boling (Louisville, Ky.) to give the Colonels the lead for good.
Centre out-shot Austin 15-4 on the evening and held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Senior Rosie McAuley (Fairborn, Ohio) earned the win in goal for the Colonels stopping two shots on the night.
