Centre blanks Birmingham-Southern with 1-0 win
Although the Centre women's soccer team had a couple of chances to take the lead in the first half, they would have to wait until the second half before scoring the game winning goal. Centre beat Birmingham-Southern 1-0 on Friday, Oct. 30 in Danville, Ky. with a late second half goal.
The first half was evenly matched between the Colonels and the Panthers, as Centre would have four shots on goal and Birmingham-Southern would have two shots. Two of Centre's shots were close to being goal opportunities, but the Colonels could not finish.
Centre would come out in the second half and dominate the rest of the game. The Colonels again had a couple of chances to score, but they couldn't find the back of the net.
In the 84th minute sophomore Chelsea Stanley (New Albany, Ind.) would score the go ahead goal off an assist from senior Katherine MacMurray (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) to put Centre up 1-0.
Centre would continue to dominate offensively for the remaining six minutes and hold on for the 1-0 win.
The Colonels finished the game with 12 shots and seven corner kicks. Sophomore Kelli Lenz (Louisville, Ky.) had two saves and would record her third shutout of the season.
Centre will play again on Sunday, Nov. 1 in their final home game against Millsaps. Kick-off is set for 2:00 p.m. and the seniors will be recognized prior to the game beginning.
