Walls named Character & Community Student-Athlete-of-the-Week
Centre women's soccer player, junior Heather Walls (Loveland, Ohio), was selected as the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete-of-the-Week ending Sunday , Oct. 4.
Walls is a defender/midfielder on the Colonels' women's soccer team. This past summer Walls volunteered for five weeks with World Camp for Kids in rural Malawi, Africa , where she helped educate children about HIV/AIDS, environmental degradation and gender equality/sexuality.
The group spend three days per school in rural communities around Lilongwe working with the children and helping them present information they had learned about HIV and AIDS through skits and songs for their communities. Walls and her group also planted trees with the classes and made and donated solar ovens, as well as hand washing devices. A program was also set up for orphans in Lilongwe by the World Camp for Kids group.
Walls is involved on Centre's campus with the SMART peer education, plays the french horn in brass quintet and orchestra, is the PR director for Alpha Phi Omega (the service and leadership fraternity on campus), is a Resident Assistant for one of the dorms on campus, and serves as a Lab assistant for Organic I lab.
In addition to being involved with activities on campus, Wells also volunteers at Ephraim McDowell Hospital in Danville, Ky. where she is a transporter.
In Ohio, Walls is involved with her church and is planning on chaperoning on a mission trip for them next summer. Wells is also involved with an ice hockey team in northern Kentucky.
Centre's next match will be Friday, Oct. 9 against Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn. Kick-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
