Women's soccer wins 1-0 in double overtime against Maryville College
Centre was able to come away with the 1-0 win over Maryville College on Saturday, Oct. 24 in Maryville, Tenn. in double overtime.
The Colonels had 22 shot opportunities in the first 90 minutes of play, but could not find the back of the net. Maryville would have eight chances themselves, but also could not answer with a goal.
In the first overtime period Centre continued to dominate with chances to score as they had four shots. Maryville wouldn't be able to get any moments to score as they had zero shots.
During the second overtime period the tides would switch as Maryville would have four shots on goal, while the Colonels only had one opportunity, which is all they needed.
Centre was given a free kick about four minutes into the second overtime. Junior Brittany Garr (Louisville, Ky.) gave Centre the 1-0 win as she was able to put the ball past Maryville's goalkeeper.
Sophomore Kelli Lens (Louisville, Ky.) helped the Colonels to the win as she would post nine saves on the afternoon.
"We have been in so many overtimes this year. I am not sure if it was our experience or the fact that we said enough is enough, either way, I am so proud of the team. It was a very impressive game by both our offense and defense," head coach Jay Hoffman said.
"This win puts us at 10 shutouts, which is the most in school history and that's a great accomplishment," Hoffman finished.
Centre will return to action on Friday, Oct. 30 as they will face Birmingham-Southern at 6:00 p.m. The game will be part of the homecoming festivities.
