2009 Women's Soccer Preview
The Centre Women’s Soccer Team is coming off their best season in history. One that saw them earn their first NCAA Tournament Bid, their first All-Americans, and their highest finish in conference play. Coach Hoffman and the Colonels hope to make the 2009 season just as enjoyable.
Although they lost a very talented group last year, Coach Hoffman knows his players are ready for a new challenge and prove that they are ready to take this team to places they have yet to go. The 2009 schedule will not be easy for them. Centre’s schedule this year has them playing 7 conference games on the road and only 4 at home. To add to the challenge, Coach Hoffman has scheduled several top Great Lake Regions teams. Centre will travel to DePauw to play Wittenberg University and Ohio Northern. Later in the month, Centre will host Denison University. Centre is hoping to return some paybacks as Centre lost twice to Denison last year. They lost 2-1 during regular season play and a 1-0 loss to them in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
The Centre Colonels are returning a very experienced team. Brittany Garr will be a junior this year and she certainly found a way to score some great goals last year. Also returning will be Katherine MacMurray and Elizabeth Hooper. Coach Hoffman believes their speed and confidence will certainly help on offense. Rosie McAuley will be in goal for Centre. Rosie has been a 3 year starter for the Colonels and hopes to lead this team to the NCAA Tournament again. Also playing in the back for Centre is Lizzie Hubbard. Lizzie will captain the team this year and help solidify the defense. After playing in Ireland this summer, Coach Hoffman is very excited about how Sarah Hall and Kelsey Boling are playing. Both players are getting to the end line and delivering great balls to the mix.
Finally, Coach Hoffman expects his freshmen to contribute right away. Coach Hoffman believes his freshmen will be ready as a majority of them are used to playing top level club ball. He is really excited about the speed and intensity out of Rachel Brannen. Rachel comes to Centre after playing club for Cincinnati Classics. Other recruits that may make a difference right away include Holly Shiels, from St. Louis, Mo. Holly is a tall center midfielder who certainly can control the pace of the play. Also helping in the middle of the field will be Samantha Messmer, from Southgate, KY. Brittany Eisner, Louisville, KY, Amy Hebbeler, Ft. Wright, KY, and Kelley Pry, Missouri City, TX will help Centre with their play in the back and on the wings. Finally, AnDe Ragsdale, Knoxville, TN, Meagan Redding, Lafayette, IN and Mary Taylor Kersey, Lexington, KY will add the intensity and fire to this year’s freshmen group.
The Centre women's soccer team plays their first game on September 1st at Asbury.
