Colonels down Southwestern 2-1 in women's soccer
Two days after falling to No. 5 Trinity University, the Centre College women's soccer team bounced back with a 2-1 win over Southwestern University to leave Texas with a split Sunday, Oct. 18 in Georgetown, Texas.
The Colonels improve to 9-4-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). Southwestern falls to 7-6-1 overall and 1-2-1 in league action.
Freshman Holly Shiels (St. Louis, Mo.) put Centre ahead 1-0 when she scored off an assist from senior Marina Hoe (Ewing, Va.) 37:07 into the opening period.
Southwestern's Danielle Madison knotted the match at one apiece when she hit the back of the net 7:27 into the second period off an assist from Andi Miller.
Just over a minute later, freshman Amy Hebbeler (Ft. Wright, Ky.) scored the game-winner and the Centre defense did its job for the final 2-1 win.
Southwestern out-shot the Colonels 10-7, while Centre held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore KellI Lenz (Louisville, Ky.) earned the win in goal for the Colonels. Lenz stopped three shots on the day.
Up next for Centre is a non-conference home contest against the College of Mount St. Joseph Tuesday, Oct. 21. Start time is set for 7 p.m. in Danville, Ky. |
