This Week in Soccer

By Jessica R. Chisley, Assistant Coach

April 24, 2007

When you become a part of a program or an organization, for the most part, you are always a part of that group. This is certainly the case in athletics. As sport so often imitates life, when you become a part of a team, you become a part of a family. The time invested, friendships made, struggles, triumphs, challenges, victories, etc, are all common bonds that bring many individuals together as one.

It is a ceaseless cycle that continues year in and year out. When one graduates from the team, a door closes on a past that is filled with many memories. Though you may leave for a while – and possibly lose touch with the very individuals who shared and impacted your life – a part of you will always remain there. Stories of seemingly impossible victories, grueling training days, agonizing defeats, team and individual accomplishments, coupled with other nuances, serve as staples in the fabric of the program’s history. That history is a complex puzzle. Each piece tells a story. In addition, each piece is important in understanding that story. Without each piece, there is no story and ultimately no history.

On Saturday, a few pieces of the puzzle came together for an event that will go down in this program’s history. The first ever Centre Women’s Soccer Alumni game took place on Saturday, April 21, 2007. The sun was shining, birds were chirping, and the pitch was beautifully green! The day was absolutely surreal! For this particular alumni, having the opportunity to play alongside old teammates and players I had only heard about, was something special!

when the game began, the Alumni were anxious, but ready. With just a few moments off the clock, the alumni struck first, taking an early 1-nil lead. The game would play out a bit longer and would remain tight. Midway into the half, a costly mistake by 2004 graduate, Jessica Chisley, played a ball directly onto the foot of Freshman Marina Hoe. The mistake would cause a 1v1 that would result in an equalizer for the Women’s team – locking all sides at one goal each. The next goal would not come until the final moments of the first half. Freshman Katie Kerr blasted a 12 yard shot that squeaked into the goal just under the cross bar. The goal would give the Women’s team a 2-1 lead going into the half. When the second half began, the Centre Women settled into a groove that would result in goals by Katie Kerr (2) and Katherine MacMurray (1). When the whistle blew, the game would end in a 5-1 win for the Women’s team.

Everyone had a blast and it was certainly a wonderful day of soccer for many reasons! Not only did we have the opportunity to connect with a few new faces, but we also reunited a few old friends!  Many things were accomplished with this event and we are very thankful to have accomplished this feat without any injury. The program has certainly experienced a few unfortunate events this year and we have learned that fluke accidents do happen. As a result, we were all thankful to have the day go off perfectly, free of injury.

On behalf of myself and the rest of the Alumni, I want to thank Jay and the Women’s Soccer program for helping to make this historic day possible! The event certainly meant a lot to all of us. It is our hope that this game becomes a long standing tradition for the Women’s program, with each class looking forward to returning to participate. Now that a connection has been established between the alumni and current women’s team, we hope it holds strong for years to come. The Women's soccer program is certainly taking many steps in the right direction.  We want to thank everyone who participated in the game and those who were in attendance. As always, take care…
