Leaving a Trail:

Centre Women's Soccer Class of 2009 Graduates with Honors

American Poet, Lecturer and Essayist – Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” This quote could not be more representative of our 2009 senior class. Only four years ago these 11 young women arrived at Centre with a brilliant future ahead of them. On the soccer field, they came into this program determined to achieve things we had never accomplished before. Off the soccer field, they carried the same focus and intensity into the classroom.

Today these young women leave behind a legacy that is brilliant and inspiring. Their honors include:

* 1 All-American

* 2 Academic All-Americans

* 1 CoSIDA Academic All-American

* The programs first-ever NCAA Tournament Bid

* 1 Female Athlete of the Year

* 3 Phi Beta Kappa Inductees (a national honorary society recognizing overall achievement)

* 1 Omicron Delta Kappa Inductee (a society based in leadership)

* 1 Phi Alpha Theta Inductee (a society created for History majors)

* 1 John R. S. Brooking Prize (awarded to a senior pursuing a career in Law).

Even more impressive than their academic and athletic honors is the future plans of these young women. Ashley Ivey of Elizabethtown, KY frequented the Dean's List and will attend Dental School at the University of Louisville. Mollie Sheron of Wooster, Ohio will attend Pharmacy School at the University of Kentucky. Casey Yeakel of Prospect, KY is a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and Phi Alpha Theta and plans to work at a hospital in Louisville before attending Medical School.

Kathryn Anderson of Louisville, KY is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Pi Sigma Alpha. She was also honored as a CoSIDA Academic All-American and earned the Brookings Award [bestowed upon a senior student pursuing a career in Law]. Kate will attend Law School at the University of Kentucky. Nicole Wendschlag of Versailles, KY is a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and will attend Medical School at the University of Kentucky. Tamaryn Tuller of Prospect, KY earned Dean's List honors and will be teaching in the Louisville Metro Area. Allison Terry of Lexington, KY is preparing for her first of many Actuarial exams. Pending successful completion of her exam, she will be eligible for a position in the Actuarial field. Then, over time, she will take a series of exams in pursuing a career as an Actuary.

Erin Menard will take a position as a Graduate Assistant in the field of leadership and marketing at the University of Kentucky. She will pursue a Masters Degree in Sports Marketing and will work with the Women's Soccer program as well as other UK sports teams. Lara Hebbeler will be attending the University of Louisville where she will pursue a graduate degree in nursing.

Ann McAlpine of Holland, MI graced the Dean's list and plans to continue in the Visual Arts field. She will be assisting a local artist in her hometown who is working to begin a new business in Grand Rapids, MI. Over the course of the summer, Ann will have her own studio where she will be painting and will also provide private art sessions to children. She will also help with coordinating community arts projects. Rachel Hosmer of Cincinnati, Ohio will be moving to Denver Colorado as a volunteer in the Young Adult Volunteer Program. Over the course of the year, she will volunteer at a day refuge for Women and Children called the Gathering Place.

A few things are certainly clear. First and foremost, this group is undoubtedly talented and driven. We could not be happier or more proud of what these young ladies have accomplished in their time at Centre College. Head Coach Jay Hoffman had this to say about this outstanding group:

“What this group of 11 players has accomplished over four years is truly amazing. Each year they have set the bar for what the standards need to be. What needs to happen next is that we as a group have to motivate and use each other, to once again prove to everyone that we are ready to take that bar and reset it at a higher level. We also always need to remember the past players that have made Centre Soccer what it is today.”

We want to wish Ashley, Mollie, Casey, Kate, Nicole, Tamaryn, Allison, Ann, Erin, Lara, and Rachel nothing but the best in all their future endeavors. Last, we thank them for everything they have done and been for this program!
