There's Just Something About Tuesday
September 16, 2008
Every season has its ups and downs. For us, this has most certainly been the case. Early on, we experienced quite the low when one of our seniors was forced to forgo her senior year due to injury. When considering the immense work the athlete had put in over the summer preparing for her final year, our hearts certainly went out to her. Though she can no longer compete on the field, she is still present behind the scenes and contributing in a big way. Her main responsibility is Tuesday Work Days. In the past, the ladies have dreaded these sessions. However, this past Wednesday was a different story. Senior Casey Yeakel had this to say about last week's session:
I LOVED it. I'm really excited about [having a former teammate] doing the work days. I'm not saying this because I think she will be easier on us, but because she has some really cool ideas. Also, she knows what it is like to be us and she runs with us. It is SO motivating to do what someone is telling you to do if they are right out there next to you doing it as well. I think we will get more out of it.
Initially we were going to do 6 stair runs in a row, but when she felt fatigued after three, she knew we would be also. So we took a break. This way, we could do the next three with the same energy as the first and get just as much, if not more, out of it.
I just really loved it. She asked us to provide feedback on how our legs were feeling so she knew how hard she could push us without going too far. It's just really motivating and exciting, I'm actually not dreading work days like I have in the past. But I'm getting just as much of a work-out and feeling good about it. Running the stairs was something different, which I liked a lot.
As a handful of the team went through Work Day, the Reserve squad hit the road for their first match of the season at the University of the Cumberlands. Driving down the road, the wind gently blew, the sun peeked through the clouds and everyone was ready for the game. However, about an hour into the drive…the clouds opened up and buckets of water poured on the van. It appeared the game would not go on. Yet, when we arrived at the field – there was not a cloud in the sky. It was quite the puzzling, but we figured the storm was heading north and had cleared us. Not so. At the moment, the referee blew the whistle a beast of a cloud rolled in. First, drizzle. Then, jumbo raindrops. Though they could barely see, the ladies were enjoying themselves and having the time of their lives in the rain. Looking back at the past few years, it is hard to recall many games played in the rain, so it was definitely an unexpected but welcomed treat. We would go on to win by a score of 5-0. Scoring on the day were: Marina Hoe (2), Aubrey Holle (1), Ann McAlpine (1), and Chelsea Stanley (1).
It appeared everyone had a fun Tuesday and the attitude certainly carried over the rest of the week. With the full team together the ladies were able to string together three consecutive days of quality practices. By Saturday, the team was feeling relaxed and confident. As the game progressed through two overtime periods, the team pulled together – drawing on the experiences from the week. We would end the game tying the No. 6 team in the country and holding them to only 3 shots on goal. Perhaps there's just something about Tuesday that set the tone for our performance. Regardless, it was a fitting conclusion to the week and a step in the right direction.
We will open our 2008 Conference play Friday, Sept. 19 when we host Oglethorpe University in a Men's/Women's doubleheader. The match is set to start at 8 p.m. We continue with another doubleheader on Sunday at 2pm - facing Sewanee University. On a final note, just a reminder: this weekend is Family Weekend. There will be many activities for everyone in the family to enjoy from athletic events, to the arts and more. We hope to see you soon!
Until next time...
