Jay's Crew'
September 30, 2008
This past week was very busy for the program. Monday was a welcomed day off for the ladies as they rested tired muscles and nursed nagging injuries. While the team rested, the coaching staff took to the road for a little recruiting. Tuesday, brought with it promise of another successful Work Day. Somehow, the ladies have truly come to enjoy these sessions. Perhaps it is due to a shift from traditional sprinting/running work to more of a workout focusing on total body fitness. Believe it or not, it almost seems as if they look forward to Tuesdays! We certainly aren't complaining! Are you kidding?!?! This is a coaching staff's dream a team that looks forward to arguably the toughest training day of the week.
With that said, this Tuesday was definitely a lot of fun. At the track, the ladies were met with 6 training stations that were placed strategically around the perimeter. The objective was to complete two cycles training for 2:00 minutes at each station with a 2:00 minute break allotted between each for rest. For roughly 45 minutes, the ladies ran stadium stairs, worked on footwork through ladders, performed running exercise, did push-ups and sit-ups as well as a little upper body strength work. By the end of the session, the ladies were patting each other on the back and celebrating yet another successful work day! As we scampered to come together before heading down to the practice field, a voice could be heard exclaiming: work day tried to kick my butt, but I kicked work day's butt!! Carrying that excitement down to the field, the ladies scrimmaged for 45 mins getting after each other and having a good time.
Thursday, the Reserve team played its first home match against Lindsey Wilson College. The ladies were pumped to have the opportunity to play in front of not only their parents and friends, but also their teammates. On the field, the team struggled, at first, trying to settle into a rhythm and we found ourselves trailing 1-0 going into the half. However, after a little encouragement and explanation of a few things, it was a much different story the second half. Our possession game had much improved and the ladies were moving the ball around the field quite beautifully. We managed to net 4 goals and went on to win 4 - 1. Scoring on the day were: Jessie Deffendall (1), Chelsea Stanley (1), Anna Horne (1), and Marina Hoe (1).
On Saturday, we loaded the bus and headed to Columbus, Ohio to take on Capital University. We should have known the day was going to be memorable the moment the bus arrived. A streamline black charter bus with nostalgic pinkish/orangeish/redish stripes running along its sides idled in the parking lot. Walking onto the bus and glancing toward the back, the first thing that caught our attention was the fact that the back seats almost looked like a coach. Traditionally there would be two seats in the back on the right side of the bus. However, this bus had four seats going straight across. Even more notable was the fact that the bus didn't appear to have a bathroom. However, after further inspection, we were in for quite the surprise. Midway back, there were a few stairs leading down to what looked like an escape hatch or perhaps a storage compartment. Opening the door [insert loud scream and creepy music here] we discovered the bathroom. It wasn't a secret compartment after all. The bathroom came to be known as the cove and served as a convenient method by which to scare unsuspecting passers-by. Senior Mollie Sheron was the first victim when our team trainer popped out, grabbing her leg as she was making her way to her seat.
By the end of the trip, we all [and by all, I mean the coaching staff and team trainer] thought the bus was pretty neat. The team on the other hand, well, that's another story. Honestly though, they just don't make busses like that anymore literally. It was a classic 1988 model. In many ways it helps you appreciate the modern features that charter busses have now-a-days: satellite, internet, flat-screened tvs etc. As a big kid though, it was like playing the game Clue. Rather than trying to figure out: who did it and with what, we instead where trying to figure out: where and/or what it was.
To further get those competitive juices flowing we stopped in Northern Kentucky for a little shopping. Come now, what game day ritual is complete without a few bargain deals at New York and Co.? With lunch in the body and a few new outfits, it was back on the bus and off to the field. The game that afternoon was to be held at the training facility of the major league soccer franchise the Columbus Crew. If you've ever seen our team's warm up shirts, they read Jay's Crew . How fitting, then, that we would have the opportunity to compete at the home of the Crew? Wearing their warm-up shirts proudly, Jay's Crew was right at home and ready for the challenging game ahead. It was certainly that challenging. The scoring went back and forth, though we never conceded the lead. The game winning goal was perhaps one of the most amazing goals we've seen in four years. With only 1 second left in regulation play, Senior Allison Terry hit a shot from 18 yards out that floated toward the goal. The goal keeper went up and though contested by Senior Erin Menard, it appeared she had tipped it over. However, as the back of the net rippled, we all exploded with cheers as we realized the ball had, in fact, stayed in. Capital kicked-off and the whistle blew signaling the end of the game. We all hugged each other with smiles stretching from ear to ear Jay's Crew had done it. Defeating the No. 5 team in the Great Lakes Region, we were all ecstatic! The coaching staff could not have been more proud of the team's efforts that day!
Now, with yet another training week upon us, we are gearing back up for conference play. Taking to the road, this will be a very challenging weekend for us so it will be imperative that we have a solid week of training.
Next match-ups for Centre
This weekend we resume conference play taking on Birmingham Southern College (BSC) and Millsaps College. As it is always tough to win on the road, we will certainly have our work cut-out for us. Friday's kick-off at BSC is set for 8pm CST. Sunday's kick-off at Millsaps will be 2pm CST. So, until next time...
