Centre splits twinbill with Brescia
The Centre College softball team split a doubleheader against visiting Brescia University Tuesday, March 7, at Millennium Park in Danville, Ky. The Colonels pulled away in game one for a 4-2 victory before falling 6-5 in an exciting nightcap.
Centre road the arm of Julia Hubbard (Louisville, Ky.) in game one as the sophomore pitcher gave up only two runs in seven complete innings of work. Hubbard scattered while striking our four and walking none. The win improves Hubbard's record to a perfect 2-0. Brescia's Holly Barnes took the loss, allowing four runs on nine hits.
Sophomore third basemen Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.) provided most of the offensive firepower for Centre. Vonderbrink had two hits including a two-run home run in the bottom of the second that tied the contest 2-2. Centre scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth for the final margin. Senior catcher Macy Dykema (Morrison, IL) also collected two hits on the day for the Colonels.
Game two went into the bottom of the seventh inning with the teams tied at five. In the top of the inning Brescia scored two runs when DH Leah Sarver blasted a two-out, two-run home run off of Centre pitcher Carolyn Besl (Maineville, Ohio). After Besl recorded the final out, the Colonels put together a rally of their own in the bottom of the inning. Junior shortstop Cate Guthrie (Castaliean Springs, Tenn.) doubled and eventually scored to cut the lead to one. However, with the bases loaded and two outs, Brescia was able to get a fly ball out to end the game.
Besl, a junior, fell to 0-2 with the loss. She gave up 6 runs on 11 hits in seven complete innings of work. Offensively, the Colonels were led by Guthrie and sophomore Linsdsey Willett (Louisville, Ky.), who had two hits and a double apiece.
Centre's record now stands at 2-2 after two consecutive doubleheader splits. The Colonels will try to sweep a doubleheader on Friday, March 10, when they welcome Defiance to Millennium Park.
