Softball splits doubleheader against Defiance
Centre College's softball team continued the trend they have had all season, splitting a doubleheader against Defiance College Friday, March 11, in Danville, Ky. Centre easily won the first game 8-2 before Defiance returned the favor in the nightcap 10-2. The day marked the third consecutive doubleheader the Colonels have split to open the season.
Centre got a solid performance on the mound from junior Carolyn Besl (Maineville, Ohio) as she worked seven complete innings for her first win of the season. Besl (1-2) allowed six hits and two earned runs while walking two and striking out two.
After Defiance took a 1-0 in the second, Centre answered in the bottom of the third when junior shortstop Cate Guthrie (Castaliean Springs, TN) hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning to give the Colonels the lead for good. Centre added three more in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 8-1 lead. Defiance added one more run in the last for the final margin.
Guthrie added two more hits and another RBI to her homer to finish the day 3 for 4 with four RBI. Sophomore Courtney Frye (Danville, Ky.) and sophomore Maggie Blackburn (Lexington, Ky.) added two hits apiece while sophomore Julia Hubbard (Louisville, Ky.) drove in two runs.
Defiance got revenge in the second game, scoring nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings to win 10-2. Hubbard (2-1) pitched and was hit with her first loss of the season for the Colonels, allowing 14 hits and nine earned runs in five innings pitched. The main reason for Defiance's runs was catcher Kelsey Sugg, who hit three-run homeruns in both the fourth and the fifth innings. In all, Sugg had three hits and six RBI in the game.
Blackburn led the way for the Centre offense with two hits while Hubbard and sophomore Laura Hufnagle (Lexington, Ky.) each drove in a run. The loss dropped Centre to 3-3 on the year. The Colonels play next on Wednesday, March 14, when they welcome Thomas More to Millennium.
