Softball comes out even in SCAC Cross play

Centre College remains at .500 for the season after playing their SCAC west foes. The Colonels began with two loses on Saturday, March 18 to Trinity and Hendrix before bouncing back on Sunday, March 19 to beat Millsaps and Rhodes.

Centre College first took on the Tigers of Trinity University in what ended as a 3-2 loss for the Colonels. The Tigers were the first to score in bottom of the 4th off a series of walks and one single. However, Centre answered in the top of the 5th with a single by lead off batter Macy Dykema (senior Mason, OH) and an error by Tigers pitcher allowed Courtney Frye (sophomore, Danville, KY) to reach base and advance Dykema. A Sacrifice by Monica Vonderbrink (sophomore Danville, KY) advanced Frye to second and Dykema to third. Another error by the tigers lead to Dykema and Frye scoring unearned runs to lead by a score of 2-1. The score would stay knotted at 2-1 until the bottom of the 7th when the error of the game for the Colonels would lead to two unearned runs for Trinity for a final score of 3-2.

In their second game of the day Centre College took on the Hendrix Warriors and lost 8-4. Neither team wasted time putting up numbers on the scoreboard in this SCAC match-up. Hendrix took the earlier lead with a two runs scored in the top of second. Centre answered with a run in the bottom of the second and both teams scored a run in the third. With Hendrix leading 3 to 2 the Colonels took advantage of a double by pinch hitter Amber Wood (sophomore Danville, KY) and then a triple by Macy Dykema that scored Wood. After an error by the Hendrix catcher Dykema scored to take Centre's only lead of the game 4 to 3. Hendrix answered by scoring 3 more runs in the sixth and than capped it of with 2 more runs in the top of the 7th to win 8-4.

Centre started Sunday, March 19th with an impressive 9-8 win over Millsaps. Millsaps jumped out to the early lead in the first off on hit and 4 stolen bases to lead 2-0. Neither team would score in the 2nd but both would light up the scoreboard in the 3rd. Millsaps began the 3rd with 4 runs off 6 hits to improve their lead to 6. However, the Colonels would begin the 3rd with a single by Lindsey Willett (sophomore Louisville, KY) followed by a sacrifice by Maggie Blackburn (sophomore, Lexington, KY) and then Millsaps walked Sharon Ball (freshman Lexington, KY). With runners on first and second Cate Guthrie (junior Castaliean Springs, TN) would single driving in Willett and advancing Ball to second. Next to bat was Julia Hubbard (sophomore, Louisville, KY) who would single scoring Ball and advancing Guthrie. With one out and Guthrie on second and Hubbard on first, Laura Hufnagle (sophomore Lexington, KY) would hit a home run to bring the Colonels within 1 at 5-6. Neither team would score in the 4th or 5th innings. Then in the 6th Millsaps would score two runs off 3 hits. The colonels were not intimidated and would score 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th to tie the game at 8 all. The winning run would be scored by Wood off a single by Holly Bradford (sophomore Louisville, KY) in the bottom of the 7th.

For their final game of the SCAC cross over Centre would play host Rhodes and earn a 9-4 win on Sunday, MArch 19. Centre would jump out to an early lead with 3 hits and 4 runs in the first. The Colonels would add two more runs in the second to lead the Lynx by a score of 6-0. Rhodes would not score until the bottom of the 4th when they were able to put two runs on the board off three hits. The colonles would answer with 2 more runs off 3 hits in the top of the 5th. These would prove to be the final runs scored for Centre as they cruised to a 9-4 win.
