Centre softball splits a pair
One day after losing two games by a combined 21 runs, the Centre College softball team rebounded to split a pair of games on the second day of the Sixth Annual Midwest Regional Invitational, defeating Fontbonne University 6-0 and then falling to Washington University 2-0, Sunday, March 26, in St. Louis, Mo.
Great pitching and strong defense keyed the Colonels win over Fontbonne, as the team did not make an error and sophomore pitcher Julia Hubbard (Louisville, Ky.) allowed only two hits in a complete game effort. Hubbard improves to 4-5 on the year with the shutout win.
Junior shortstop Cate Guthrie (Castaliean Springs, Tenn.) was 2 for 3 for the game with two doubles and two runs driven in. Sophomore outfielder Laura Hufnagle (Lexington, Ky.) also drove in two runs for the Colonels.
Centre, which lost 14-1 to Washington the day before, played the #7 team in the country much tougher the second time. The Colonels managed only two hits, but limited Washington to only six hits. Junior pitcher Cici Besl (Maineville, Ohio) pitched six strong innings allowing only two runs - one earned - in the loss. Besl falls to 4-5 on the season.
Centre, now 8-10 overall, will next host Maryville College, Wednesday, March 29, in Danville, Ky. The doubleheader is slated to start at 4 p.m.
