Colonels sweep doubleheader
The Centre College softball team swept the first two games of a four-game series with Rose-Hulman on Saturday, April 1, in Terre Haute, Ind. The Colonels won game one 12-9 before winning the second 8-4.
The Colonels attacked early and often with their bats in game one. Six hits and a walk led to six runs in the top of the first inning for Centre. Although Rose-Hulman battled back for four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, they were not able to recover from the early deficit as the Colonel offense did not let up.
Centre added a run in the third and then a two-RBI homerun off the bat of sophomore Laura Hufnagle (Lexington, Ky.) in the fourth gave the Colonels a comfortable 10-5 lead. After junior Carolyn Besl (6-5) gave up eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits through the first five innings, sophomore Julie Hubbard (Louisville, Ky.) pitched the final two innings for her first save of the season.
Centre was also led offensively by Hubbard, who collected four hits while driving in four runs. Along with Hufnagle, freshman Sharon Ball (Louisville, Ky.), senior Macy Dykema (Morrison, Ill.), and freshman Rebecca Rhule (Versailles, Ky.) each collected two hits for the Colonels. In all, Centre had 15 hits in the game.
Game two saw more of the same from the Colonel offense as they scored four runs in the first four innings for a 4-0 lead. The Colonels blew the game open in the fifth, again with Hufnagle leading the way. Hufnagle blasted her second two-RBI homerun of the day as the Colonels put four runs on the board for a 8-0 lead.
Hubbard allowed four runs, three of them earned, over the final two innings but held on to the lead for an 8-4 lead. Hubbard improved to 6-5 with the win while the Colonels improved to 12-10 (2-0 SCAC) with the wins.
