Hufnagle leads Colonels to series sweep
The Centre College softball team finished off a four-game series sweep of Rose-Hulman on Sunday, April 2, in Terre Haute, Ind. The Colonels got strong pitching in both games, winning the first game 9-3 before easily winning the last 9-1.
Centre pitchers Julia Hubbard and Carolyn Besl both pitched very well in the games. Hubbard, a sophomore from Louisville, Ky., did not allow a run in the last inning and two-thirds in the first game before pitching a complete game to earn the win in the second. Hubbard (7-5) pitched in every game of the series, earning two wins and a save. Besl, a junior from Maineville, Ohio, earned her second of the series in the first game Sunday. Besl (7-5) worked five and a third innings, allowing three earned runs on only three hits.
Sophomore Laura Hufnagle (Lexington, Ky.) hit her fifth and sixth homeruns of the last five games Sunday, blasting two-RBI homeruns in both games. Hufnagle finished the series 9 for 18 with four homers, five runs scored, and 10 RBI.
Centre also got multiple hits in game one from sophomore Maggie Blackburn (Lexington, Ky.), who had three in as many at bats, and senior Macy Dykema (Morrison, Ill.) and freshman Rebecca Rhule (Versailles, Ky.), who each collected three.
Centre sophomore Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.) also added a two-RBI homer in the second game. Hufnagle, Blackburn, freshman Sharon Ball (Lexington, Ky.), and sophomore Brittany Gowers (Louisville, Ky.) each added two hits apiece in the game.
Centre, now 14-10 (4-0 SCAC), travels to Sewanee April 8-9 for another four-game SCAC series.
