Colonels sweep SCAC doubleheader
The Centre College softball continued its great play of late, sweeping a SCAC doubleheader at Sewanee on Saturday, April 8. The Colonels easily won both games, shutting out the Tigers 13-0 in the first game before winning the second game 11-2.
Junior Carolyn Besl (Maineville, Ohio) pitched almost perfectly in game one, giving up only two hits in five complete innings of work. After consecutive one out singles in the first inning, Besl retired the next thirteen hitters in order to end the game. Besl (8-5) also struck out five hitters while not walking a single Tiger. Centre's defense also played flawlessly behind her without committing an error.
The offense scored eight runs in the first inning and never looked back. The big hit of the inning came when sophomore Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.) cleared the bases with a three RBI double. Vonderbrink was also one of three Colonels with two hits in the game, joining sophomore Courtney Frye (Danville, Ky.) and freshman Rebecca Rhule (Versailles, Ky.).
The second game was more of the same for the Colonels. Despite giving up an unearned run in the first to trail 1-0, the game was never really in question as Centre scored three in the second and 10 in the fourth to take a 10-2 lead. Sophomore Julia Hubbard (Louisville, Ky.) went the distance on the mound, allowing two runs, only one of them earned, on five hits while striking out three and walking none. Hubbard improved to 8-5 on the season.
The offense was led by senior Macy Dykema (Morrison, Ill.), who had three hits and three RBI in as many at-bats. Frye and sophomore Laura Hufnagle (Lexington, Ky.) each added two hits and two RBI.
Centre, now 16-10 and 4-0 in the SCAC, will put an eight-game winning streak on the line Sunday, April 9, when they play games three and four of the series against Sewanee.
