Saints end Colonels 11-game win streak
Centre Softball's 11-game winning streak was ended Saturday, April 15th, with a two-game sweep by Thomas More College. The Colonels suffered a 7-2 loss in the first game before losing again in the second game 1-0 in eight innings.
In the first game, Centre's offense couldn't rally, as they combined only five hits the entire game and left three runners on base. Thomas More scored twice before the Colonels scored one in the 4th inning. Thomas More then rallied in the 5th to score five runs, leaving Centre trailing 7-1. Centre added one more in the 7th inning, but it wasn't enough to keep up their win-streak.
Sophomore Laura Hufnagle (Lexington, Ky.) was 1-for-2 with an RBI, while sophomore, Holly Bradford(Louisville, Ky.) batted in one run with a sacrfice fly to center field. Sophomore center-fielder Maggie Blackburn (Lexington, Ky.) was 1-for-3 while freshman right-fielder Sharon Ball (Lexington, Ky.) went 1-for-3 and scored once. Shortstop Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.)went 1-for-3 as well with a double to right-center.
Junior pitcher Cici Besl (Cincinnati, Ohio) took the loss for the Colonels giving up five runs off of nine hits.
The second game of the double header was a pitchers duel. Sophomore pitcher Julia Hubbard (Louisville, Ky.) and Saint's pitcher Wisenell scattered a total of five hits thorughout the game.
Centre's could not put anything together as their hits came by Blackburn (first inning), Hubbard (second inning), and junior designated-hitter Cate Guthrie (Castaliean Springs, Tenn.) (sixth inning). Thomas More also committed three errors but the Colonels left eight runners on base.
Thomas More won the game in the bottom of the eighth with a sacrifice bunt moving the designated runner (who, in extra innings is placed on second base at the beginning of the inning) to third and a sacrifice fly to right field.
Centre returns home for a four-game series against Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference rival DePauw University. Both squads are 8-0 in conference play, and will be vying for the #1 seed in the East Division. First pitch of game one is Saturday, April, 22 at 1 p.m.
Sunday, April 23 will feature games three and four of the series as well as Senior Day for the lone senior, Macy Dykema (Morrison, Ill.).
