Centre drops both ends of doubleheader
In a match up of two teams with 8-0 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) records, the Centre College softball team dropped both games in a doubleheader to DePauw University, losing the first game 9-6 and then falling 10-2 in the nightcap, Saturday, April 22, in Danville, Ky.
With today's results, Centre falls to 19-14 overall and 8-2 in the SCAC, while DePauw moves into a first place by itself with a 26-7 overall mark and 10-0 record in conference play.
Game one saw the Tigers jump out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. After a sacrifice fly scored the first run of the game, DePauw designated hitter Rachel Gill hit her first of two home runs of the day to give the Tigers the early 3-0 cushion.
Right fielder Chelsy Patterson extended the DePauw lead in the top of the second with a two-run home run to make the score 5-0. Centre answered in the bottom of the second with four runs on five hits. Sophomore third baseman Courtney Frye (Danville, Ky.) and sophomore designated hitter Julia Hubbard (Louisville, Ky.) recorded run-scoring singles and freshman right fielder Sharon Ball (Lexington, Ky.) added a two run single.
Following a scoreless third inning, DePauw added a pair of unearned runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to extend its lead to 8-4. Sophomore left fielder Laura Hufnagle (Lexington, Ky.) closed the gap to three runs when she led off the bottom of the fifth with her 12th home run of the season.
The Tigers pushed across another run in the sixth to make the score 9-5. Ball then led off the bottom of the seventh with her first home run of her career, but it would not be enough as DePauw pitcher Lauren Curosh retired the next three Colonel hitters in order to end the game.
Ball and senior catcher Macy Dykema (Morrison, Ill.) paced the Colonels offensive attack with two hits each. Ball finished with three runs driven in and a run scored, while Dykema also scored a run. Junior pitcher Cici Besl (Maineville, Ohio) suffered the loss allowing all nine runs on 12 hits in seven innings of work.
The second game also saw DePauw race out to an early lead. The Tigers scored one in the second, four in the third and three in the fourth to take an 8-0 lead. The Colonels scored a run in the bottom of the fourth when Dykema hit a one-out solo home run, her first of the season, to put the Centre on the scoreboard.
DePauw added another run in the fifth, while Centre use a squeeze bunt by Ball to score the team's second run of the game. The Tigers scored their final run in the seventh and then retired the Colonels one-two-three in the home half of the seventh to seal the win.
Centre finished the game with only five hits, two of those coming off the bat of Ball. Hubbard took the loss for the Colonels on the mound allowing 10 runs - five earned - on 16 hits over seven innings.
The two teams will return to action, Sunday, April 23, when they complete their regular season conference schedules with a doubleheader beginning at noon, in Danville, Ky.
