Colonels open SCAC Tournament with 4-1 loss
After falling behind early, the Centre College softball team was unable to recover dropping its first game of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament to Hendrix College 4-1, Friday, April 29, in Sewanee, Tenn.
The Colonels, which entered the tournament as the #2 seed from the SCAC Eastern Division, fall to 19-17 overall, while Hendrix, which is the #3 seed from the SCAC Western Division, improves to 28-12 on the season.
The Warriors wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard. Following two walks and a sacrifice bunt to start the game, a Hendrix single put the Warriors ahead 2-0 in the top of the first inning.
Following a scoreless inning by both teams, Hendrix pushed across two more runs in he top of the third to extend its lead to 4-0.
Centre threatened in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs and nobody on, junior shortstop Cate Guthrie (Castaliean Springs, Tenn.) singled. Sophomore left fielder Laura Hufnagle (Lexington, Ky.) then walked to put runners on first and second with two outs. Sophomore designated hitter Julia Hubbard (Louisville, Ky.) then doubled scoring Guthrie and putting runners on second and third. Hendrix retired the next hitter to keep the score at 4-1.
The Colonels threatened again in the bottom of the seventh inning loading the bases with two outs, but failed to score any runs finishing with the 4-1 loss. Centre had its opportunities, but failed to take advantage of them leaving 14 runners on base.
Centre will now play the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Saturday, April 29 in an elimination game. The contest is slated to begin at 9:00 a.m. in Sewanee, Tenn.
