The Centre College softball team played a doubleheader against Georgetown College Wednesday, March 7, at Millenium Park in Danville, Ky. After dropping the opener 7-2, the Colonels fought back to win the second game 5-4.

Georgetown went up early with a run in the first inning while Centre had to wait until the bottom of the second before it got on the scoreboard. A double by junior Lindsey Willett (Louisville, Ky.) drove freshmen Charlotte Jones (Lexington, Ky.) home. Centre had problems in the next inning, as Georgetown scored two more runs to lead 3-1. The game calmed down until the top of the fifth and sixth innings, when Georgetown struck again, scoring twice more in each inning and increasing its lead to 7-1.

Centre tried to rally late in the game but was stopped short after only posting one run in the seventh when senior Cate Guthrie (Castaliean Springs, Tenn.) drove home freshmen Amber Mills (Danville, Ky.).

Jones started on the mound and pitched five innings, allowing 12 hits and five runs. She was replaced in the sixth by junior Julia Hubbard (Louisville, Ky.) who finished pitching the game, allowing three hits and two runs.

Centre got off to a better start the next game, shutting out Georgetown until the seventh inning. Hubbard and freshmen Jenny Jones (Stanford, Ky.) started off the scoring for the Colonels as they were batted home by sophomore Jennifer Marees (Jacksonville, Fla.) and junior Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.), respectively, in the bottom of the second.

The action picked up at the end of the game when the Colonels added to their lead. Sophomore Rebecca Rhule (Versailles, Ky.) and Hubbard were both batted home after a hit from Charlotte Jones. Junior Courtney Frye (Danville, Ky.) was driven home by junior Lindsey Willett (Louisville, Ky.) to get the Colonels up 5-0 by the end of the inning.

A late push by Georgetown attempted to tie the game with the Colonels as four runs were scored in the seventh. Centre was able to suppress the attacking Georgetown offense and win the game 5-4.

Senior Carolyn Besl (Maineville, Ohio) started and pitched six innings for Centre. She was replaced by freshmen Tyler Travis (Lexington, Ky.) in the seventh after allowing 10 hits and coming away with four strikeouts. Travis finished the game for the Colonels with a big strikeout and allowed only two hits.

The Centre offense performed much better this game as Hubbard, Rhule and Charlotte Jones each had multiple hit games, Jones also posted multiple RBI's.

Centre, now 3-2, will host a weekend of doubleheader games as they play Defiance College Friday, March 9, at 5:00 pm and Hanover College, Saturday March 10, at 1:00 pm
