Softball sweeps Franklin College
The Centre College softball team hosted Franklin College for a doubleheader Saturday, March 31 at Millenium Park in Danville, Ky. The Colonels swept the series, winning 11-3 in the first game and 12-0 in the second.
Centre took an early lead in the game when it brought in four runs in the bottom of the first. Two runs came in by pitching errors by Franklin. It was freshmen Jenny Jones (Stanford, Ky) who stepped up and drove home senior Cate Guthrie (Castaliean Springs, Tenn.) for the first earned run of the game. Sophomore Rebecca Rhule (Versailles, Ky.) then singled to get junior Julia Hubbard (Louisville, Ky.) home.
Centre increased it's lead in the bottom of the third. Freshmen Charlotte Jones (Lexington, Ky.) drove home Hubbard and junior Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.) got junior Laura Hufnagle (Lexington, Ky.) home after she singled. Franklin brought in two runs in the top of the fourth but Centre locked down the game in the bottom of the inning when it brought in three runs. Franklin brought in a run in the top of the fifth to get it's final score to three. Centre finished scoring in the bottom of the fifth after Hufnagle sent one deep to right field to get both Hubbard and Guthrie home.
Hubbard earned the win for the Colonels as she started and pitched the entire game. She allowed only three runs off five hits and struck one player out.
Eight different Centre players had hits during the game. Rhule had three hits and brought in tow runners. She was followed by Jenny Jones and Hufnagle, who each drove in two runners also. Guthrie also posted a multiple hit game.
It was all Centre in the next game as they again took an early lead on Franklin. It brought in three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Guthrie batted in junior Lindsey Willett (Louisville, Ky.) while Hufnagle sent junior Maggie Blackburn (Lexington, Ky.) home. Freshmen Tyler Travis (Lexington, Ky.) ended the scoring after she batted in Guthrie to establish the 3-0 lead.
The Colonels brought in five runs in the bottom of the second to secure the game. Two more runs came in off throwing errors by Franklin. Guthrie then sacrificed and out to get Blackburn home for another run. Junior Courtney Frye (Danville, Ky.) singled to get Rhule home. Jenny Jones brought in the last run of the inning after she sent Travis across the home plate.
Centre scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to end the game. The seniors stood out as they had major contributions this final inning. Carolyn Besl (Maineville, Ohio) doubled and brought in Willett and Jones. Guthrie tripled to get Blackburn across the plate.
Freshmen Tyler Travis earned the win for the Colonels. She pitched the entire game allowing no runs off four hits. She also struck out five batters.
The Centre batted was hot again as 10 players posted hits. Frye, Travis, Blackburn and Willett all had a multiple hit game. Guthrie batted in three runners.
Centre complete it's weekend of doubleheaders when it travels Cincinnati, Ohio to play Mount St. Joseph Sunday, April 3, starting at noon. |
