The Centre College softball team played Rhodes College at Millenium Park in Danville, Ky. in a four game series this past weekend. A doubleheader was played on Saturday, April 21 followed by a doubleheader on Sunday, April 22. The Colonels took the first game but lost the next three in a series of close games that were decided by two or fewer runs.

The opening game saw Centre take the lead in the bottom of the third when junior Maggie Blackburn (Lexington, Ky.) batted home junior Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.). Rhodes took a run in the top of the fourth to tie the game 1-1. It wasn't until the bottom of the seventh inning when Centre brought in the winning run. Blackburn stepped up to the plate and singled to left field to get freshmen Amber Mills (Danville, Ky.) home.

Freshmen Tyler Travis (Lexington, Ky.) earned the win for Centre as she started and pitched the whole game. She struck out eight batters and allowed only one run off three hits.

Only three Centre players had hits in the low scoring game. Blackburn led them by having multiple hits and bringing in the two runs.

The second game of the match up was another lower scoring contest. The teams seemed to be in a dead lock for the three first innings. Rhodes brought in the only run of the game in the top of the fourth off a home run. The game then fell back into a defensive battle, as neither team was able to score.

Freshmen Charlotte Jones (Lexington, Ky.) was on the mound for the whole game. She showed why she leads the team in most batters struck out as she struck out six Rhodes players. She allowed only four hits and one run.

Centre again struggled getting hits throughout the game. Junior Julia Hubbard (Louisville, Ky.) was the only batter to have multiple hits.

The first game of the second doubleheader saw a similar result. The game was a defensive battle as both sides failed to score in the first eight innings. Rhodes took the game in the top of the ninth off a deep double to left field which allowed one run to come in. Centre was prevented from coming back in the bottom of the inning.

Senior Carolyn Besl (Maineville, Ohio) pitched for the Colonels. She allowed one run off seven hits and struck out four batters.

Five Centre players made contact with the ball. Senior Cate Guthrie (Castaliean Springs, Tenn.) and freshmen Jenny Jones (Stanford, Ky.) both tallied multiple hits in the game.

The final game of the series saw more excitement as both teams put numbers up on the scoreboard. Centre brought in the first run of the game in the bottom of the first. Rhodes took the lead in the top of the second by bringing in five runs. Centre scored in the top of bottom of the third to cut down the lead. Vonderbrink stole her eight base of the season and was then batted home by Guthrie. Centre halted any other offensive challenge from the Rhodes batters but could only score one more run in the match before the final inning. Guthrie doubled in the bottom of the sixth and got Blackburn home. The game ended 5-3 in favor of the Lynx.

Travis started on the mound for Centre. She only pitched an inning and a half before being replaced by C. Jones, who finished the game. Travis allowed five runs off two hits and struck out one player. C. Jones struck out three batters and allowed only three hits.

Six Centre players recorded hits in the game. Guthrie lead the team by having multiple hits and batting in two runners.
