Softball News

The Centre College softball team hosted the University of the South in a four game conference series this past weekend. There were doubleheaders on Friday, April 13 and Saturday, April 14, both at Millenium Park in Danville, Ky.

Centre college did not let Sewanee have a chance in the opening game. The Colonels kept the Tigers scoreless the whole game while they brought in eight runs for the win. The Colonels scored in the opening inning when senior Cate Guthrie (Castaliean Spring, Tenn.) sacrificed and out to get junior Lindsey Willett (Louisville, Ky.) home. The runs began to pour in for the Colonels in the bottom of the fourth as they got in five runs. Centre added its last two runs by bringing in one runner in each the fifth and sixth innings.

Senior Carolyn Besl (Maineville, Ohio) started on the mound for the Colonels. She pitched five innings and allowed only four hits. She also came away with two strikeouts. Besl was replaced by freshmen Tyler Travis for the last inning. Travis had one strikeout and allowed no hits.

Seven different players had hits for the Colonels. Juniors Laura Hufnagle (Lexington, Ky.) and Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.) lead the group with multiple hits. Vonderbrink also drove two runners in.

The second game saw a similar outcome, as the Colonels were all over the Tigers once again. Although Centre gave up two runs this game, they got the win by posting nine. The Colonels grabbed an early lead as they brought in three runs in the bottom of the first. Guthrie again sent home Willett and junior Julia Hubbard (Louisville, Ky.) homered to bring in the other two runs. It was Hubbard's second home run of the year. Centre brought in three runs in the bottom of the fourth after Sewanee got it's first run of the series in the top of the inning. Vonderbrink smashed her third home run of the year to bring the Centre count to six. Centre would finish its scoring by posting one hit in the bottom of the fifth and two in the bottom of the sixth to make the final score 9-2.

Freshmen Charlotte Jones (Lexington, Ky.) started and pitched six innings for the Colonels. She allowed only two runs off three hits and stuck out five Sewanee batters. Hubbard came in as replacement to finish the game in the seventh. Hubbard allowed no hits.

Five Centre batters had a multiple hit game. Hubbard batted in two runners while Vonderbrink drove in four.

The next day the Colonels were determined to play at the same level and take the final two games of the series. In the first match up the Colonels won 8-2. This time Centre brought in most of its runs early in the game as it scored six in the first two innings. It was Guthrie again who started the scoring as she doubled deep to center field to get Willett home. Hufnagle then batted in Guthrie. Two more runs came in off pitching and throwing errors by Sewanee. Vonderbrink hit her fourth home run of the season in the bottom if the second and brought the score to 6-0. Centre added its final two runs of the game by scoring one run in each the bottom of the fifth and sixth. Sewanee scored its two runs in the top of the sixth.

Travis started pitching for the Colonels. She allowed two runs off three hits and struck out six batters. Jones replaced Travis in the final inning of the game. Jones allowed no hits and struck out two batter.

Four Centre players had multiple hit games. Guthrie lead the group with three hits while Hufnagle, Hubbard and junior Courtney Frye (Danville, Ky.) each had two hits. Hufnagle was the only player to bring in multiple runners.

The Colonels finished the final game of the series by winning 11-0. Centre brought in seven runs in the first inning. Guthrie got the Colonels going as she drove home freshmen Amber Mills (Danville, Ky.). Hubbard then sent Willett home and Guthrie scored when sophomore Jennifer Marees (Jacksonville, Fla.) batted her in. Rebecca Rhule singled to get Hubbard across the home plate and Mills brought in the final two runs of the innings when she drove in Vonderbrink and freshmen Amanda Colebank (Morgantown, Wv.). Centre brought in four runs in the bottom of the third to finish the game.

Freshmen Tyler Bottoms (Harrodsburg, Ky.) earned the win for the Colonels as she pitched the whole game. She allowed only one hit and stuck out three batters.

Four Centre players posted multiple hits throughout the game. Mills and Hubbard lead the group by batting in multiple runners.

Centre, 18-15 and 5-4 SCAC, will play its last games of the regular season next weekend when they host conference rival Rhodes College at Millenium Park in Danville, Ky. starting at noon on Saturday, April 21.
