Softball begins by splitting doubleheader with Transylvania
Centre College's softball team split games in its opening weekend with local rival Transylvania University, Friday March 2, at Millennium Park in Danville, Ky. The Colonials took the opener, winning 6-5, but dropped its second game 2-1. Both games were decided on hits coming late in the sixth or seventh innings.
Transylvania took the lead early with one run in the top of the first but Centre answered in the bottom with three runs, with two driven in by junior Laura Hufnagle (Lexington, Ky). Centre struck again in the bottom of the second, scoring two more runs, while keeping Transy quiet until the top of the third when they scored their second run. The Centre runs came from junior Lindsey Willett (Louisville, Ky.), who stole home, and junior Maggie Blackburn (Lexington, Ky.).
Transy scored one run in each of the next three innings, to tighten the game up at 5-5. Centre broke away in the bottom of the sixth, getting a big run from Blackburn after she singled, stole second, and worked her way to home to secure the win for the Colonels.
Junior Julia Hubbard (Louisville, Ky) started on the mound and pitched the first five innings. Freshman Charlotte Jones (Lexington, Ky.) finished the final two innings, earning the win along with three strikeouts. Centre and Transylvania battled again in the second game until the seventh inning when Transy got its second run, ending the game 2-1. Transy earned its first run in the top of the fifth from a solo home run by senior Lyndsey Mayberry. Senior Carolyn Besl (Maineville, Ohio) started and pitched the whole game allowing seven hits and two runs along with five strikeouts.
The Centre offense was kept quiet the whole game, as seven players were struck out. Their only run came from freshman Amber Mills (Danville, Ky.) in the fourth, who was walked and then driven home by Hufnagle.
The loss dropped the Colonels to 1-1 on the season. Their next game is Saturday, March 3, when they host Wilmington College. |
