Centre defeats Wilmington at home
The Centre College softball team took on Wilmington College Saturday, March 3, in Danville, Ky. Centre dominated the game and took its second win of the season, winning 14-7.
The game started off when Wilmington took a run from the
Colonels
in the top of the first. Centre answered, evening the game up after a home run from junior Julia Hubbard (Louisville, Ky.). Hubbard went 3-4 on the day and finished with three runs batted in, and added another run in the bottom of the third. Centre began to break away in the bottom of the third when they scored 11 runs. Additional home runs from juniors Laura Hufnagle (Lexington, Ky.) and Lindsey Willett (Louisville, Ky.) sent five runners home, while Hubbard, juniors Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.), and Maggie Blackburn (Lexington, Ky.) and freshman Amber Mills (Danville, Ky.) drove in runs to set up the large lead.
Wilmington began to rally in the top of the fifth by scoring six runs in an effort to tie the game. Centre was able to pick up the defense and only allow one more run the rest of the game while picking up two more of its own.
Freshman Tyler Travis (Lexington, Ky.) started for the Colonels, pitching the first three innings and allowing only three hits and one run along with three strikeouts. More help from another young pitcher came from freshman Taylor Bottoms (Harrodsburg, Ky.). She came in to earn the win by pitching the final four innings. Bottoms allowed ten hits and six runs but came away with two strikeouts.
Major contributions came from Blackburn, Willett, Hufnagle and Hubbard, who each had multiple RBI's and hits in the game. Support from Mills and Vonderbrink, who both had multiple hits and two runs of their own, made sure the game was over by the bottom of the sixth, when Centre got its final run from sophomore Jennifer Marees (Jacksonville, Fla.).
Centre, now 2-1, will host Georgetown College Wednesday, March 7 in a doubleheader starting at 5:00 pm. |
