Centre splits doubleheader with LaGrange
The Centre College softball team split a weekend doubleheader with LaGrange College, winning the first game 4-0 then dropping the second game 9-1 Saturday, April 19 in LaGrange, Georgia.
With the split, the Colonels record goes to 19-17 on the year and the Panthers stands at 20-16.
Game One
Centre opened game one with run production early on. In the top of the first inning senior Lindsey Willett (Louisville, Ky.) singled to lead off the game, and was later driven in on a two run single by senior Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.) to put the Colonels ahead 2-0.
Centre added a run in the second on a pair of singles by junior Rebecca Rhule (Versailles, Ky.) and Willett, then added another run in the third when freshman Taylor Childress (Nashville, Tenn.) doubled to drive in senior Julia Hubbard (Louisville, Ky.) who singled earlier in the inning. The two runs gave the Colonels an early 4-0 lead.
The four runs would be more than enough for Colonels pitcher Tyler Travis (Lexington, Ky.). Travis pitched the complete game shutout, surrendering only three hits over seven innings of work while striking out eight and walking only one.
Centre was led at the plate by Willett and Hubbard who each recorded two hits. Willett scored a run and had one RBI, Hubbard also scored a run.
Amanda Daniel suffered the loss for the Panthers after pitching seven innings and allowing four runs on seven hits.
Game two
After defeating the Panthers in game one, the the Colonels could not get anything going offensively in game two as they fell 9-1.
The game started as a pitching duel between the Centre's Charlotte Jones (Lexington, Ky.) and LaGrange's Amanda Daniel, as neither pitcher allowed a run over the first three innings of play.
The Panthers offense came alive in the fourth inning as they put up five runs on five hits to go ahead 5-0. Centre chipped away with a run of their own in the fifth, but the Panthers added three more in the bottom half of the fifth, and a run in the sixth to secure the 9-1 victory.
Jones suffered the loss for the Colonels after pitching 3.2 innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits while striking out three and walking one. Hubbard relieved Jones and worked 1.1 innings allowing three runs, one earned on three hits. Sophomore Taylor Bottoms (Burgin, Ky.) allowed one run on one hit in relief of Hubbard in the sixth inning.
Senior Maggie Blackburn (Lexington, Ky.) was the lone Colonel with multiple hits on the day. Blackburn went 2-3 at the plate, recording two of Centre's four hits.
Amanda Daniel picked up the win for the Panthers, throwing a complete game, allowing only one run on four hits in six innings of work.
LaGrange was led at the plate by Valeree Williams who was 3-4 with a run scored and a run driven in.
The Colonels are scheduled to return to action Sunday, April 20 as they travel to Piedmont for another non-conference doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for 12 pm. |
