Colonels split with Piedmont

After dropping game one 6-5, the Centre College softball team came back with a win in game two 4-2 against Piedmont College Sunday, April 20 at Walker Field in Demorest, Georgia.

The Colonels record goes to 20-18 on the year with the split and the Lions go to 25-10.

Game One

Centre opened up game one with an early lead, scoring a run in the second inning and two in top of the third to take an early 3-0 lead. Freshman Taylor Childress (Nashville, Tenn.) singled with two outs in the second inning and scored on an RBI double by junior Rebecca Rhule (Versailles, Ky.). The Colonels added two more in the third sophomore Amber Mills (Danville, Ky.) drove in two runs with a double to put Centre ahead 3-0.

The Lions responded in the bottom half of the third as they put up six runs on six hits to take the 6-3 lead.

The Colonels rallied in the fifth as seniors Lindsey Willett (Louisville, Ky.) and Maggie Blackburn (Lexington, Ky.) started the inning with a pair of singles. Senior Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.) then doubled to drive in two and cut the lead to 6-5.

After a scoreless sixth, Centre came to bat in the seventh needing a run to tie the game. With two outs, Blackburn singled and stole second, but the Colonels were unable to drive her in as a ground out ended the game.

Tyler Travis suffered the loss for the Colonels, pitching six innings, allowing six runs on nine hits while striking out three and walking three.

Centre was led at the plate by Willett, Blackburn, and Childress who each had two hits in the loss.

Game two

After dropping game one, and trailing 2-0 for nearly the entire game in game two, the Colonels rallied with four runs in the final inning to win the game and split the weekend series with Piedmont.

The Lions opened up with two runs on three hits off Centre pitcher Charlotte Jones (Lexington, Ky.) in the first inning.

After scoreless innings from the second through sixth inning, Centre finally got some runs of their own in the seventh inning. Senior Julia Hubbard (Louisville, Ky.) started the inning with a single. Then Childress and Jones each singled to load the bases. Sophomore Taylor Bottoms (Burgin, Ky.) singled to drive in two and tie the game at 2-2. Willett and Blackburn then each followed with run scoring singles to put the Colonels ahead 4-2.

Jones hit the first Piedmont batter of the seventh inning, then retired the next three to secure the win for the Colonels. Jones picked up the victory pitching seven innings allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out three and walking one.

At the plate, Blackburn, Childress, and Jones each recorded two hits for the Colonels. Blackburn drove in one run, and Childress and Jones each scored a run in the win.

Centre is scheduled to return to action Friday, April 25 at Millennium Park in Danville, Ky. in the opening round of the SCAC Tournament.
