Swimming teams split against Washington & Lee
It its second meet in three days to start the season, the Centre College men's and women's swimming and diving teams earned a split, with the women defeating Washington & Lee University, while the men fell to the Generals, Sunday, Oct. 29, in Danville, Ky.
The women, which opened the season with a win against the University of the Cumberlands Friday night, improve to 2-0 on the season with a 118-87 win, while the men, which fell to the Patriots Friday evening, fall to 0-2 in the early going with a 117-81 defeat.
The women's team won nine of the 11 events on the day with four swimmers winning multiple events. Sophomores Caitlin Rhodes (Louisville, Ky.) and Liz Starr (Westchester, Ohio) and Erin Phillips (Knoxville, Tenn.) and freshmen Alice Fleet (Franklin Tenn.) opened the day winning the 400-medley relay with a time of 4:14.76.
In the fifth event of the day, freshman Sadie Allen (Omaha, Neb.) won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:00.97. Freshman Meredith Angel (Campbellsville, Ky.) won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.14.
Starr then earned two wins in the next two women's events, finishing first in the 200-yard IM (2:18.42), followed by a win in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.75).
Allen, Fleet and Angel earned their second wins of the day winning the 100-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke. Allen swam a 55.63 to win the 100-yard freestyle. Fleet won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:28.75 edging out a W&L swimmer by 0:00.13, and Angel picked up a win in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.99.
In the final women's event of the day, Angel and Allen teamed with junior Jessica Walther (Pleasureville, Ky.) and freshman Ana McMurtry (Fort Wright, Ky.) to win the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Colonels edged the Generals in the race by only 0:00.45.
The men's team earned three wins in the meet, winning the 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard breaststroke.
Junior Pat Ley (Louisville, Ky.) earned the Colonels' first win, edging out a W&L swimming in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.42, only 0.04 ahead of the second place finisher. Sophomore Michael Henry (Maryville, Tenn.) won the 100-yard backstroke in 56.53 and sophomore Brad Erickson (Owensboro, Ky.) picked up another close victory, winning by only 0:00.04 in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.20.
"I couldn't be happier with the level of performance on both our men and women's side, especially considering how early it is in our season," Centre head coach Dean Brownley said.
Both the men's and women's teams will next travel to Sewanee, Tenn., Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3-4, to participate in the Sewanee Invitational.
