Competing against five other schools, the Centre College men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined to finish first in the Colonel Classic, hosted by Centre, Friday and Saturday, Jan. 12-13, in Danville, Ky.

The Centre men (548) finished second behind only the University of the Cumberlands (620). Asbury College was third (219), followed by Wilmington College (180), King College (145) and Berea College (72).

On the women's side, the Colonels finished first (557) ahead of the Cumberlands (481), Asbury (330), Wilmington (301), King (174) and Berea (47). With the scores combined Centre finished only four points ahead (1105-1101) of the Cumberlands for the combined team championship.

Of the 19 men's events, Centre earned nine wins (three relays and three individual events), led by sophomore Jimmy Tatgenhorst (Knoxville, Tenn.), who won three individual events and was part of all three winning relay teams.

The Colonels finished first in the 200-yard free relay (1:30.52), the 200-yard medley relay (1:41.89) and the 400-yard free relay. Centre's time of 1:41.89 in the 200-yard medley relay is a new pool record, breaking the previous mark of 1:42.54, set by DePauw University in 2002.

Tatgenhorst was part of all three teams and also won the 50-yard freestyle (22.46), the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.62) and the 100-yard freestyle (48.75). Sophomore Brad Erickson (Owensboro, Ky.) also won multiple events, participating in the 200-yard medley relay as well as winning both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.84) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:23.13). Freshman Hunter Hayes (Hopkinsville, Ky.) won the one-meter diving event (253.80) for the Colonels' other individual event victory.

Tatgenhorst led all male competitors with 48 total points, while Erickson tied for sixth with 39 points. Sophomore Michael Henry (Maryville, Tenn.) tied for ninth with 37 points and junior Luke Neubauer (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman Will Jenkins (St. Louis Park, Minn.) tied for 11th with 35 total points each.

The women's team won six of their 19 events, including three relays and three individual events. Centre won the 200-yard free relay (1:43.17), the 400-yard medley relay (4:11.34) and the 200-yard medley relay (1:57.58). The Colonels time of 1:43.17 broke the previous pool record of 1:43.59 set by the Cumberlands in 2005.

Freshman Meredith Angel (Campbellsville, Ky.) had a big day taking part in all three winning relay teams as well as winning two individual events. Along with the relay wins, Angel won the 50-yard freestyle (25.23) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.63). Freshman Sadie Allen (Omaha, Neb.) also earned an individual win, finishing first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:21.40).
