Swim teams sweep Sewanee
For the first time since 1994, the Centre College men's and women's swimming and diving teams have defeated Sewanee-the University of the South, combining to win 293.0-184.0, Saturday, Jan. 20, in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels, who also defeated Murray State University at the same meet 381.0-26.0, improve to 7-4 on the men's side and 9-2 on the women's side.
The Centre men tallied 11 wins out of the 13 events, including winning both the 400-yard medley relay (3:47.76) and the 400-yard free relay (3:20.13) to defeat Sewanee 147.0-91.0 and Murray State 181.0-7.0. The Colonels had four multiple event winners, including both freshman Will Jenkins (St. Louis Park, Minn.) and sophomore Jimmy Tatgenhorst (Knoxville, Tenn.), who earned three wins each.
Tatgenhorst won the 50-yard freestyle (21.66) and the 100-yard freestyle and anchored the 400-yard freestyle relay team. Jenkins won the 1000-yard freestyle (10:29.09) and the 500-yard freestyle and was also part of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team.
Sophomores Brad Erickson (Owensboro, Ky.) and Michael Henry (Maryville, Tenn.) also won multiple events. Both Erickson and Henry were part of the winning 400-yard medley relay team, while Erickson picked up a win in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:25.33) and Henry won the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.00).
The Centre women won 10 of its 13 events, including both the 400-yard medley relay (4:20.24) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:49.40). The Colonels defeated Sewanee 146.0-93.0 and Murray State 196.0-16.0.
Centre also swept both men's diving events with senior Dustin Schulten (Louisville, Ky.) winning the 1-meter diving event (286.88) and freshman Hunter Hayes (Hopkinsville, Ky.) winning the 3-meter diving event (482.71).
Five women won multiple events, led by freshmen Sadie Allen (Omaha, Neb.), Meredith Angel (Campbellsville, Ky.) and sophomore Liz Starr (Westchester, Ohio). Allen, Meredith and Angel each won two individual events and were part of a winning relay team.
Allen won the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.13) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:27.16), while also anchoring the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team. Angel earned wins in the 50-yard freestyle (24.61) and the 100-yard freestyle (55.23) and was also part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team. Starr was part of the 400-yard medley relay team and also won both the 200-yard IM (2:18.32) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:20.58).
Other multiple-event winners were freshman Alice Fleet (Franklin Tenn.) in both the 1000-yard freestyle (11:19.66) and the 400-yard freestyle relay and sophomore Erin Phillips (Knoxville, Tenn.) in the 400-yard medley relay and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:39.56).
Centre will return to action Thursday, Jan. 25 to host Union College. The dual meet is set to start at 6 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
