Centre swim teams enjoy successful Florida trip
On its annual training trip to St. Petersburg, Fla., the Centre College men's and women's swimming and diving teams capped off the trip by winning a four-team relay meet on New Year's Eve day.
The Colonels, which trained for four days at the North Shore Pool, averaged swimming about nine miles a day. On New Year's Eve day, Centre competed in a relay meet against Washington and Jefferson College, Augustana College and Saint Michaels College.
Both the men and women swam very well with the men's team winning eight of its nine events and finishing second in the ninth event for a team score of 114, 30 points better than Washington and Jefferson in second place. The women won five of its eight events and finished second in the other three, also scoring 114 team points to finish 24 points ahead of Washington and Jefferson.
The trip also represented the first competition for junior Jillian Dove (Lexington, Ky.), senior Dustin Schulten (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman Hunter Hays (Hopkinsville, Ky.) Dove and Schulten returned from studying abroad during the fall term, while Hays returned to action following surgery.
"It was a great team effort the entire week," Centre head coach Dean Brownley said. "I'm very pleased with the week and look forward to the return of some other team members who have recently returned from studying abroad," Brownley added. Both the men's and women's teams will return to Danville, Ky. for a meet against arch-rival Transylvania University, Saturday, Jan. 6. The dual meet is set to start at 2 p.m.
