Colonels sweep Transylvania in swimming
Coming off a very successful training trip to St. Petersburg, Fla. over the holiday break, the Centre College men's and women's swimming and diving teams continued to have success by sweeping arch-rival Transylvania University, Saturday, Jan. 6, in Danville, Ky.
The Centre men won 198-96 to improve to 2-4 on the year, while the women also won in impressive fashion 187-100 to up their record to 4-2 in dual meets this year.
The men's team, which lost only one event at a relay meet in Florida, continued to swim well, winning 13 of its 16 events. Four swimmers won multiple events led by sophomore Jimmy Tatgenhorst (Knoxville, Tenn.). Tatgenhorst won the 100-yard backstroke (55.99), the 50-yard freestyle (22:48), 100-yard freestyle (49.75) and anchored the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:25.92).
Freshman Will Jenkins (St. Louis Park, Minn.) also had a big day winning the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.00), the 500-yard freestyle (5:01.39) as well as swimming a leg on both the 400-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay teams.
Sophomore Brad Erickson (Owensboro, Ky.) and sophomore Michael Henry (Maryville, Tenn.) also won multiple events. Erickson won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.36), while Henry won the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.33). Both Erickson and Henry also swam a leg each on the winning 400-yard medley relay team.
Other winners for the men included freshman Nick Thompson (Louisville, Ky.) in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:52.30), freshman Hunter Hayes (Hopkinsville, Ky.) in the 1-meter diving event (292.98) and senior Dustin Schulten (Louisville, Ky.) in the 3-meter diving event (261.60). Junior Patrick Ley (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman Matt Kaufman (Louisville, Ky.) were also members of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team.
On the women's side, the Centre women won 12 of its 16 events on the day with five members winning multiple events. Freshman Sadie Allen (Omaha, Neb.) led the way with four wins on the day. Fleet won the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.72), the 100-yard freestyle (56:13), the 500-yard freestyle (5:29.37) and was part of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:50.68).
Freshmen Meredith Angel (Campbellsville, Ky.) and Alice Fleet (Franklin, Tenn.) picked up three wins each. Angel won the 100-yard backstroke (1:10.74), the 50-yard freestyle (25.56) and anchored the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team.
Sophomore Liz Starr was also a three-time winner. Starr won the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.02), the 200-yard IM (2:19.47) and was part of the winning 400-yard medley relay team. Sophomore Erin Phillips (Knoxville, Tenn.) was a two-time winner as a member of both the 400-yard medley relay and 400-freestyle relay teams.
Other winners for the women included junior Samantha McCure (Louisville, Ky.) in the 3-meter diving event (159.75), freshman Ana McMurtry (Fort Wright, Ky.) in the 400-yard medley relay and junior Jillian Dove (Lexington, Ky.) in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
The Centre men and women will return to action Friday and Saturday, Jan 12-13, when they host the Colonel Classic.
Fleet finished first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.20), the 200-yard backstroke (2:20.26) and was part of the winning 400-yard medley relay team (4:18.35).
