Swimming and Diving News

One day after opening its season against the University of the Cumberlands, the Centre College men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to DePauw University in a dual meet, Sunday, Oct. 14 in Danville, Ky.

The Colonels won seven of the 32 total events, including three individual events and one relay on the women's side and three individual events on the men's side. Centre fell 192-89 on the men's side and 161-114 on the women's side.

Sophomores Sadie Allen (Omaha, Neb.) and Meredith Angel (Campbellsville, Ky.) paced the Colonel women. Allen earned individual wins in the 200-yard Free (2:00.16) and the 500-yard Free (5:33.17), while Angel won the 100-yard Breast stroke (1:10.31).

Both Allen and Angel then teamed up with senior Jillian Dove (Lexington, Ky.) and freshman Caroline Stephens (Louisville, Ky.) to win the 200-yard Free relay with a time of 1:42.95, setting a new pool record. The previous record was 1:43.17.

Freshman Brent Bowman (Allison Park, Penn.) finished his first weekend as a collegiate swimmer with a pair of wins. Bowman first won the 1,000-yard Free (10:17.58), followed by a first place finish in the 500-yard Free (4:58.03). His time in the 1,000 set a new pool record, breaking the previous record of 10:21.32 set last year by sophomore Will Jenkins (St. Louis Park, Minn.). The original pool record was 10:23.70 set in 1982.

Sophomore Hunter Hayes (Hopkinsville, Ky.) also picked up a win on the men's side. Hayes placed first in the 1-meter Diving with a score of 253.35.

Along with the records set by Centre swimmers, DePauw also set eight new pool records. The Tigers' women broke the 200 medley relay record and the men set new pool records for the 200 Freestyle relay and the 200 Medley relay. In addition, the following individuals for DePauw also set pool records: Callie Boehme (1,000 Free), Amanda Steir (100 and 200 Fly), Maddison Hamil (100 Free) and Katie Doogan (200 IM).

"It was a tough weekend with two very good opponents," Centre head coach Dean Brownley said. "Now we will see how much character we have as a team bouncing back from two tough losses like this. We will be at NCAA Division I opponent IUPUI Friday and former SCAC opponent Rose-Hulman on Saturday, so it doesn't get any easier for us any time soon," Brownley continued.

The Centre swimming and diving teams will next compete Friday, Oct. 19 against Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. The meet is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. in Indianapolis, Ind.
